9th House

Sanskrit: Dharma

fortune and dharma: higher learning, philosophy, faith, long journeys, and the grace that arrives unearned — the chapter where the self asks why.

In Vedic astrology, the 9th house (Dharma) is the house of fortune and dharma — higher learning, philosophy, faith, teachers, long journeys, and the grace that arrives without being earned. It is the most fortunate house of the chart: the house of the father and of God, of luck and of meaning.

The 9th house shows your capacity for belief and your access to grace. It rules religion and spiritual practice, higher education, publishing, law, and the teachers and guides who set you on your path. It also governs long-distance travel and the foreign lands where perspective is gained. Its karakas are Jupiter and the Sun — wisdom and authority.

As the best of the tri-konas (trines), the 9th is the house of bhagya, fortune itself. A strong 9th house grants luck, protection, wise counsel, and a life that seems to be guided; an afflicted one shows loss of faith, troubles with father or teachers, or luck that runs out at the moments it is needed most.

Classical Significations:
