12th House

Sanskrit: Moksha

loss and liberation: expenses, foreign lands, sleep, seclusion, and the quiet door to the spiritual path — the ending, and the peace found by releasing.

In Vedic astrology, the 12th house (Moksha) is the house of loss and liberation — expenses, foreign lands, sleep, seclusion, and the endings that open the spiritual path. It is the last house of the chart: the place where everything dissolves, is released, or is transcended.

The 12th house shows what you spend and what you let go of — money lost in expenses, energy lost in sleep, and the solitude where the self meets itself without masks. It rules foreign residence, imprisonment and hospitals (places of confinement and healing), and the charitable giving that loosens attachment. It is also the house of moksha itself: liberation from the cycle of desire. Its karakas are Saturn and Ketu, the planets of renunciation.

As a dusthana, the 12th is classically difficult for worldly matters — but it is the most spiritually potent house of the chart. A strong 12th house grants peace in solitude, gains through foreign lands, and a natural inner life; an afflicted one shows chronic loss, escapism, or the feeling of being confined by life itself.
