1st House
Sanskrit: Tanu
the chapter you open with: the body, the temperament, the face you present before you have said a word. It sets the tone for all the others.
In Vedic astrology, the 1st house (Tanu) is the house of the self — the body, the face, the temperament, and the general direction of the life. It is the ascendant (Lagna), the single most important point in the chart: the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. Everything else in the chart is read from it.
The 1st house shows how you enter a room before you say a word — health, vitality, physical appearance, and the first instinctive way you meet the world. Its lord and any planets sitting in it color the whole personality. The sign on the ascendant sets the stage of the life; the planets in the 1st house play their roles directly on it.
Classically the 1st house is a kendra (angle) of the strongest vitality. Its karaka is the Sun. A strong 1st house grants health, presence, and self-possession; an afflicted one brings a fragile body or a self that struggles to assert its own direction.
Classical Significations:
- Roles: The body, the appearance, the temperament, the vitality, the direction of life.
- Karaka: The Sun.
- Nature: A kendra (angle); the most important house in the chart.
