2nd House

Sanskrit: Dhana

resources: money, family, speech, and the things you call your own — the chapter about survival and value.

In Vedic astrology, the 2nd house (Dhana) is the house of resources — money, movable wealth, family, speech, and the accumulated sense of what belongs to you. It is called the house of sustenance: the mouth that eats, the voice that speaks, and the values that hold a life together.

The 2nd house shows how you earn and keep — not your career (that is the 10th), but your relationship to money itself: savings, spending, and the family assets you inherit or build. It also governs the spoken word: a strong 2nd house gives a voice that persuades, while an afflicted one shows itself in harsh or careless speech. Its karaka is Jupiter, the planet of wealth.

As a dhana (wealth) house it is read together with the 11th (gains) for the full picture of prosperity. A well-placed 2nd house grants accumulation and family security; an afflicted one brings debt, family friction, or words that cost more than they earn.

Classical Significations:

  • Roles: Money, wealth, family, speech, food, the face and mouth.
  • Karaka: Jupiter.
  • Nature: A dhana (wealth) house; an upachaya-adjacent house of accumulation.
