10th House

Sanskrit: Karma

career and action: the work you do in the world, the reputation that outlives you, the karma you create deliberately — the chapter the public reads.

In Vedic astrology, the 10th house (Karma) is the house of career and action — the work you do in the world, your reputation, your public standing, and the karma you create deliberately. It sits at the top of the chart (the midheaven): the highest point, the chapter the public reads.

The 10th house shows your profession and how you rise in it — the authorities, employers, and institutions you deal with, and the legacy you leave. It is the house of ambition made real: not what you wish for, but what you actually do, day after day, in the sight of the world. Its karakas are the Sun and Saturn — visibility and sustained effort.

As a kendra and one of the two most important houses after the ascendant, the 10th is read together with its lord's condition for the full career picture, and with the dashamsha (D-10) chart for finer detail. A strong 10th house grants status, authority, and a career that grows with age; an afflicted one shows professional setbacks, disputes with authority, or work that never quite translates into standing.

Classical Significations:

  • Roles: Career, reputation, public life, profession, authority, legacy.
  • Karaka: Sun and Saturn.
  • Nature: A kendra (angle); the house of deliberate karma.
