Jupiter

the teacher

wisdom: expansion, fortune, dharma, teaching. It is where you grow and what you are blessed with — the classical indicator of fortune and protection.

In Vedic astrology, Jupiter (Brihaspati) is the wisest of the planets and the great benefic: the significator of fortune, expansion, teaching, and the higher law. In classical readings it is the guru of the gods, the planet that protects, blesses, and enlarges everything it touches — which is why it is called the indicator of fortune itself.

Jupiter's sign shows the style of your wisdom and your faith — where you are generous, optimistic, and able to see the larger pattern — while its house shows where life enlarges you and where you are asked to grow. Its condition describes the quality of your luck: not random luck, but the fortune that flows from right judgment, integrity, and the willingness to learn.

The most benefic of the grahas, Jupiter rules children in some of its significations and the husband in a woman's chart; it is the karaka of wealth, knowledge, and progeny. A strong Jupiter grants wisdom, moral weight, and protection through life's crises; an afflicted one brings overconfidence, misplaced faith, or extravagance that outruns judgment.

Classical Significations:

  • Roles: The Guru, the teacher, the priest, the advisor, the judge, children.
  • Anatomy: The liver, thighs, fat tissue, and the sense of balance.
  • Dignity: Rules Sagittarius and Pisces. Exalted in Cancer. Debilitated in Capricorn.
