Krittika
the sharpener: cutting, purifying fire; determined and precise.
In Vedic astrology, Krittika is the third nakshatra, spanning the junction of Aries and Taurus. It is ruled by the Sun and presided over by Agni, the god of fire. The name means "the cutter," and its symbols — the razor and the flame — capture its essential nature: a sharp, purifying heat that separates essence from dross.
This is the nakshatra of decisive action and moral clarity. The fire of Agni burns away impurity, whether in metal, food, or character. Natives with prominent Krittika placements possess a natural incisiveness; they see flaws quickly and feel compelled to correct them. This makes them excellent critics, editors, surgeons, and reformers, but it also creates an internal pressure to meet impossibly high standards.
The Sun's rulership adds a drive for individual recognition and authority. The Aries portion expresses this as pioneering initiative; the Taurus portion grounds it in sustained effort and material results. Both segments share a rajastic quality — the energy is active, transformative, and often intense.
The shadow of Krittika is the blade turned inward. The same discernment that spots error in the world becomes relentless self-criticism. Perfectionism stalls completion; the fear of impurity becomes a cage. The developmental task is learning that purification is a process, not a verdict — that the flame warms as well as cuts.
